Interview with Author of Book “The Monster Inn”, “The Downhills”, “Uncle Balloon”, “The Land of Fringe”, “The Dragon Garden”, “Rusty Iron”, “Three Mad Princes“- Koos Verkaik
Interview by Er Pushp
He was born in a small village no far from Rotterdam. He left home soon and worked as a copywriter and learnt to write in a sharp way, short and to the point. He wrote hundreds of scripts for comic artists, made records and started his writing career. His main hobby is playing guitar and making his own recordings at home. He is obsessed by writing and even work in the weekends.
He resides in The Netherlands. He has been writing since the age of 7 years. He wrote many stories and rent them to people for money. He asked his mother to give the money to charity organizations. He was Europe’s youngest script writer for comics at the age of 16 and his first novel was published when he was only 18 years old.
Er Pushp:- When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Koos Verkaik:- When I was at the age of 7. I wrote many, many stories and rent them to people for money. I asked my mother to give the money to charity organizations. I was Europe’s youngest script writer for comics at the age of 16 and my first novel was published when I was only 18 years old. I never stopped writing. More than 60 different titles published under my own name, more than 60 under pseudonym.
Er Pushp:- What can you tell us about your book?
Koos Verkaik:- It is a series of children’s books; Alex and The Wolpertinger. I intend to write 30 books, working on part 14 now. Mr. Mahip Bhatia from Pharos Books India and
Uno Services approached me. There was an immediate click between us and we decided to work together on different novels and the series of children’s books. The series will be published soon all over the world, in English, Indian languages, French, Spanish and even Russian and Japanese!
That makes me very proud, of course.
The series is about the friendship between little Alex, who lived in a land of giants in the middle ages. He meets a dangerous, mean, odd wolpertinger from the mysterious Downhills. Together they plunge in all kinds of adventures. It is a series full of wonders, giants, monsters, dragons… Also perfect for animation. Mahip and I will try to get the series into film as soon as possible.
Exciting times; new children’s books and new novels! I consider myself as one of the hardest working authors of this time – writing every single day, never had a writer’s block. Soon my novel Legio will be published with Pharos Books, followed by Mortals & Gods and many, many other new novels…
Er Pushp:- How long does it take you to write a book?
Koos Verkaik:- That depends. There is always the research; I have over 2,000 books in my workroom and I read lots of nonfiction books. I am a nonfiction book collector about science, magic, alchemy – you name it! I write the first pages with a ballpoint. When the first lines feel good, I start working on a laptop. In Dutch. Then I translate my work into English. I am used to write fast. It takes me a couple of months to come up with a new novel between 80,000 and 100,000 words. An Alex and The Wolpertinger book is written in a month.
Er Pushp:- What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Koos Verkaik:- I mastered my genre, Magic, Mystery & Adventure. My quirk is, that I can take my readers with me on the most wonderful journeys and make them believe everything is possible. And I always give a full explanation at the end of my books, I never keep them in the dark. I fool my readers and play with my plots, but finally everyone know what had actually happened. A literary agent in the USA showed my work to Mr. Bill Thompson, the editor of the first Stephen King and John Grisham books. He invited me to come to his office in New York, where we worked on different manuscripts. It brought me far! As a Dutchman I was finally recognized in the United States of America!
Er Pushp:-When did you write your first book and how old were you?
Koos Verkaik:- As said, I was only 18. And I wrote it in a very short time – a long weekend without sleep. It is a science fiction book, title: Adolar. About a man who has permitted scientists to place his brain into the computers of a space ship. It was published right away. Still remember how proud I was when I saw my first book in a window shop. I was also present when the book was printed; first printing of 5,000 copies!
Er Pushp:- How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
Koos Verkaik:- Over 60 different titles under my own name, over 60 different titles under a pseudonym.
My absolute favorite is The Dance of The Jester, my best work so far. It will be published soon by Outer Banks Publishing Group in the USA and there will be a Hindi translation soon by Pharos books.
Er Pushp:- Do you hear from your readers much? What kind of things do they say?
Koos Verkaik:-I promote my books everywhere and fortunately I receive the best reactions. They also come up with great reviews. They are always 100% positive. The wolpertinger in my series of children’s books eats dandelions. When I was signing books in a book shop, a girl popped up with dandelions in her hand – for Ludo the Wolpertinger… So nice!
Er Pushp:-What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I am also a musician and have equipment at home to record – I play lead guitar, bass, drums, mouth harp etc. You can find my music on YouTube, for example:
Er Pushp:-What is your work schedule like when you are writing?
Koos Verkaik:-No schedule – absolute chaos! There is chaos in my head and I write down notes everywhere, on sheets of paper, on computers and laptops, in notebooks and so on. I have ideas in my head and they have to come out. I never know exactly where the story will take me, it all happens for me while I am busy writing. After I have typed the magic words ‘The End’, the chaos is over – and then it starts all over again when I start working on the next book…
Er Pushp:-Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer, if so, what are they?
Koos Verkaik:-No. It is a process that is different for every individual writer. Just start working and soon it will turn out if you have that typical writers blood or not. The only advise I can give is; read lots of novels, read lots of nonfiction books and create your own style. Never come up with imitations of big writers, that simply does not work.
Er Pushp:-To whom you want to dedicate your book?
Koos Verkaik:-Alex and The Wolpertinger and another series of children’s books, Saladin the Wonder Horse, are dedicated to all the brave children in the world. I write adventures for cool kids.
